STATEMENT

True Estate began as a satire on the overpriced rental market in Melbourne and developed into a character study of a middle-aged man, someone who since childhood he has been taught that money and property will guarantee his survival.   But what has he to offer as a person?  At the mid-point of his life, having had no real time for a social life, this lonely man is ready for love and marriage.  The object of his desire is Justine and everything he has is hers for the taking.

We shot with the Canon EOS 7D, running the open source firmware crack, Magic Lantern, which allows the camera to shoot in uncompressed RAW.   I wanted to shape the film around a performance and much of the action was developed in rehearsal.  It was instructive to see how Matthew opened up space in the monologue, generating space both for action and reflection.  The more the character is discovered, the more the plot resolves itself.  The most truthful moment in the character’s life, during the film’s final scene, was improvised.
